Your Travel Health Wallet: Cards, Vaccines and Translation in One Place

Before a weekend away or a trip abroad, three things matter most: a valid EHIC or GHIC, your vaccine records, and a way to explain your health to a doctor who speaks another language.

    EHIC and GHIC

Irish residents use the EHIC; UK residents use the GHIC or a UK EHIC. Each person needs their own card. Add each expiry date to your wallet and you'll see a reminder 60 days before it runs out.

    Vaccine records

Vaccines you record in your ViscaCare calendar or Vault appear in your wallet, so you can show them when you need to.

    Talking to a doctor abroad

Ask Mia to prepare a short summary in the local language for you to review before showing it to a doctor or pharmacist.

    In an emergency

Call 112 anywhere in the EU, or 999 in Ireland and the UK.

    Common questions

Does it cost anything to renew an EHIC or GHIC?

No. Both cards are free from the official sources: the HSE in Ireland and the NHS in the UK. Avoid websites that charge a fee.

Is an EHIC or GHIC the same as travel insurance?

No. They give access to state healthcare on the same terms as local residents. They do not cover private care, repatriation or cancelled trips.

    Can Mia translate for me?

Mia can prepare a summary in another language for you to review and show a doctor. Mia gives general guidance, not medical advice.

    Where these figures come from

Charges and thresholds change. We check these figures regularly, but always confirm the current rate with the official source before you rely on it. This page explains entitlements, costs and process - it is not medical advice.
