Healthcare System
Liechtenstein (population ~40,000, area 160 km²) has a healthcare system modelled on Switzerland's mandatory insurance system. The country has ONE hospital: Liechtensteinisches Landesspital (Vaduz) — a small but modern facility handling general medicine, surgery, and emergencies. For specialist, complex, or tertiary care, patients transfer to Swiss hospitals: Kantonsspital Graubünden (Chur — 30 min) or Kantonsspital St. Gallen (45 min). Austrian hospitals in Feldkirch (Landeskrankenhaus Feldkirch — 15 min from Vaduz) are also commonly used. Despite its tiny size, Liechtenstein has good GP coverage and several private practices. Alpine rescue is coordinated with Swiss REGA and Austrian mountain rescue services. Healthcare costs are Swiss-level — among the highest in the world.
