    Employee healthcare benefits in Ireland

A practical guide for employers and HR teams comparing the ways organisations in Ireland support their people's health — from health insurance to online Doctor access, wellbeing programmes and healthcare navigation.

    The short answer

Irish employers can offer private health insurance, but it is not the only option. Many organisations now provide everyday healthcare access instead of or alongside insurance: online Doctor appointments, an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), wellbeing support and help navigating the health system. Smaller employers can do this too, and benefits can often include employees’ families.

What healthcare benefits can Irish employers offer?

Most employee healthcare benefits in Ireland fall into a handful of categories:

Common employee healthcare benefits in Ireland
BenefitWhat it typically coversThings to consider
Private health insuranceHospital care, specialists, some outpatient costsPremiums usually rise at renewal; everyday GP visits are often only partly refunded after a claim
Cash plansPartial refunds on everyday costs such as GP, dental or physioEmployees pay first and claim back
Online GP accessVideo or phone consultations with registered DoctorsEmployers can choose who pays for appointments
Employee Assistance ProgrammeConfidential counselling and support linesFocused on wellbeing rather than GP care
Wellbeing and navigationHealth information, guidance, appointment preparationHelps people use the services they already have

What options exist besides traditional private health insurance?

Health insurance is designed primarily for hospital and specialist care. Many employees’ day-to-day needs are simpler: speaking to a Doctor quickly, getting a prescription where clinically appropriate, understanding a test result, or knowing where to go. An everyday healthcare benefit focuses on those needs without claims or excesses.

These approaches are not mutually exclusive. Some organisations keep insurance for senior staff and add everyday access for everyone; others start with everyday access because it is simpler to run.

    Can SMEs provide healthcare benefits?

Yes. Small and medium-sized businesses do not need a large HR department to offer meaningful healthcare support. Options such as online GP access and EAPs can be provided for small teams, and some let the employer decide how much to fund. See our guide to healthcare benefits for SMEs.

Can employers provide online GP access or pay for GP appointments?

Yes. Employers can give staff access to online Doctor consultations and decide who pays for each appointment — the employee, the organisation, or a mix (for example, a funded allowance). Read more in online GP access as an employee benefit.

    Who provides the clinical care

ViscaCare is a healthcare access and navigation platform. Online Doctor consultations are delivered by suitably registered Doctors through our clinical partner, Health Hero. Ask Mia offers general guidance and healthcare system information, not medical advice or diagnosis.

Can employee benefits include family members?

Health is a household matter: a sick child or an unwell parent affects an employee’s week as much as their own health. Some benefits charge extra per dependant; others, including ViscaCare Enterprise, include family members as standard.

How can healthcare benefits support international employees?

People who have recently moved to Ireland may not know how GPs, Medical Cards or emergency departments work, and some prefer to discuss health in their own language. Healthcare navigation and multilingual support can make a real difference to their confidence. See healthcare support for international employees.

    What about tax and benefit-in-kind?

In Ireland, many non-cash benefits provided by an employer are treated as benefit-in-kind and taxed through payroll, and specific rules apply to some benefits such as medical insurance. We do not give tax advice: confirm how any benefit you provide will be treated with Revenue or your accountant.

    Common questions

What healthcare benefits can Irish employers offer?

Common options include private health insurance, cash plans, online GP access, Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs), wellbeing programmes and health screening. Many employers combine several, depending on budget and what employees actually use.

Is there an alternative to private health insurance for employees?

Yes. Some employers offer everyday healthcare access instead of, or alongside, insurance — for example online Doctor appointments, an EAP and healthcare navigation. These support day-to-day needs but do not replace hospital or specialist insurance cover.

Can employers pay for employees’ GP appointments?

Yes. An employer can choose to cover GP appointments in full, fund a set number, or give employees access and let them pay per appointment. Tax treatment may vary, so check with Revenue or your adviser.

Can employee healthcare benefits include family members?

Many can. Some insurance schemes charge per dependant; ViscaCare Enterprise includes employees’ families as standard, with appointment funding following the same terms as the employee.

Are employee health benefits a taxable benefit-in-kind in Ireland?

Many non-cash benefits provided by an employer are treated as benefit-in-kind (BIK) and taxed through payroll. Treatment depends on the benefit and how it is provided. Revenue publishes guidance, and you should confirm the position for your scheme with Revenue or a tax adviser.
