The short answer
A medical certificate is issued by a registered Doctor after a consultation, when the Doctor decides that issuing one is clinically appropriate. Online consultations can result in a certificate, but booking an appointment never guarantees one. Employers should apply their sick leave policy consistently, whether a certificate comes from an in-person or online consultation.
Are online GP medical certificates valid in Ireland?
Irish statutory sick leave requires a certificate from a registered medical practitioner. The legislation does not require that the consultation took place in person. What matters is that a registered Doctor assessed the person and was satisfied that certifying was appropriate.
When will a Doctor issue a medical certificate?
Doctors in Ireland are regulated by the Irish Medical Council and are expected to certify only what they can honestly confirm. In an online consultation, the Doctor may decide the condition can be assessed remotely and issue a certificate, or that an in-person assessment is needed first. That decision belongs to the Doctor.
No certificate is automatic
A ViscaCare membership or appointment does not entitle anyone to a medical certificate. A certificate results only from a consultation in which the Doctor decides that issuing one is clinically appropriate.
What does statutory sick leave require?
Under the Sick Leave Act 2022, eligible employees are entitled to a set number of paid statutory sick days each year (currently five), paid at 70% of normal wages up to a daily cap, provided they supply a medical certificate. The number of days and the cap can change, so check the current Citizens Information guidance.
What about Illness Benefit?
Illness Benefit from the Department of Social Protection has its own certification process, usually handled directly between the Doctor and the Department. Employees should check the Citizens Information guidance on Illness Benefit for current requirements.
What should employers know?
- Set out in your sick leave policy when a certificate is required and how it should be submitted.
- Treat certificates from online and in-person consultations consistently.
- Respect privacy: a certificate states fitness for work, not a diagnosis you are entitled to know.
- Seek employment law advice for disputes or long-term absence.

Common questions
Are online GP medical certificates valid in Ireland?
A medical certificate is issued by a registered medical practitioner. Irish law on statutory sick leave requires a medical certificate but does not require the consultation to happen in person. Whether a Doctor can certify remotely is a clinical judgement for that Doctor.
Can an online Doctor issue a medical certificate?
Yes, if after a consultation the Doctor decides it is clinically appropriate. Doctors must only certify what they can honestly confirm, so a certificate is never automatic.
Does booking an online appointment guarantee a sick note?
No. Booking or paying for an appointment does not entitle anyone to a medical certificate. The Doctor decides based on the consultation.
Do employees need a medical certificate for statutory sick leave in Ireland?
Yes. Under the Sick Leave Act 2022, an employee must provide a medical certificate to qualify for statutory sick pay. Employers may also have their own sick pay policies with additional requirements.
